After a series of charity events in the academic year of 2025–2026—including Pocky Day, the Winter Bazaar, Pi Day, the Charity Run, and Sports Day Charity Sales—and through the collective efforts of our students and staff, SUIS-GB successfully raised and donated RMB 110,299 this year. We visited the primary school we support in partnership with Climb for Peace in early June.

This is my fourth year serving as the Prefect Supervisor and coordinating charity events at SUIS GB, and I continue to find this journey incredibly rewarding. Since becoming involved in charity work, I have come to appreciate a simple but powerful truth: giving often brings us more joy and fulfilment than receiving. After our trip to Mangshi, the prefects and I realised even more deeply that charity is not merely about donating money or resources; it is a connection from heart to heart and the beginning of a positive change for both those who give and those who receive.
Before you read the heartfelt reflections from our prefects participants and Ms Jiang’s closing thoughts on charity, I invite you to pause and remember a moment when you felt genuinely loved and supported. Think about how that feeling has encouraged, comforted, and inspired you along your journey. May we continue to take good care of ourselves, while also having the courage and generosity to care deeply for our society, for other people, for animals, and for the natural world around us.

It has been a while since we returned from Mangshi, yet many scenes still linger in my mind. During our rainforest hike on the first two days, we were surrounded by humid air. We trod on thick fallen leaves and tangled tree roots. Our guide spotted Phayre’s leaf monkeys in the treetops and asked us to keep quiet. Through binoculars, we saw an adult monkey holding its baby on a branch. Though we could not get a clear view, the experience of staying quiet to avoid disturbing the animals left a deep impression on me. After the hike, we enjoyed local snacks together and simply savored the delicious food.
On the third day, we visited Fengping Town Central Primary School. Four of us took turns giving speeches to students in Grades Four and Five about our charity work. I felt nervous at first, but was deeply touched by their earnest attention. Later, we watched the flag-raising ceremony. The students stood in perfect order, and some younger children sang the national anthem loudly. I felt humbled that our small efforts were treated with such sincere respect.
We held various activities, among which fan painting was the most popular. I was feeling unwell and low-spirited that day. Two Grade Five girls noticed this and came to comfort me. I gave them a blank fan to join the activity. When the event drew to an end, they returned the fan to me. They had painted the whole surface except the middle part, reserving it for me to finish. Touched by their innocent smiles and eager looks, I drew two small yellow flowers in the blank space, just like their bright faces.
This trip made me realize that charity is not merely about giving. It is built on genuine and heartfelt connections. The monkeys in the rainforest, local delicacies, children’s singing, and the special fan have all become precious memories of Mangshi, together with the sunshine and misty scenery of Yunnan in June.

On my first day in Yunnan, our guide said, “Nine is a very large number.” I was puzzled. To me, nine was only a digit, an inverted shadow of six. Yet I carried the sentence with me as we walked among the Silver and Golden Pagodas — beautiful, distant, not yet understood. That was my first lesson: the unity of heaven and humanity. The next days passed in fragments: a hike, berries, coffee. But the phrase kept returning. In Chinese, nine always exceeds itself: the Ninth Heaven, surviving nine deaths, a hair among nine oxen, and the echo of enduring time (久). I was still confused — until we reached the school. The children painted on fans with uninhibited imagination, turning brushes and pigments into avenues for self-expression. In that moment, I came to understand what “nine” truly means. Our charity aimed to nurture their creativity and let them be carefree. We never sought to craft a polished, finished “ten”. These children stay rooted at nine: vibrant, unconfined, and forever evolving. Nine holds such beauty precisely because it pauses just before perfection—leaving room for growth, endless possibility, and all the stories we have yet to help them tell.

The Pagodas brought our palms together. Two pagodas, standing in Muang Khon, two fingers the Buddha brings gently together. They say: Nine is a vast number. Nine tiers of pagoda, nine vaults of heaven, nine lifetimes to earn a single shared glance. We circled once, twice… Reverence is a wholeness that does not need to be counted to its end. The mountain taught us a different language— green tear, stone breath, the sudden swish of a monkey’s tail writing riddles in the leaves. They looked at us with ancient, unhurried eyes as if to say: you are just passing through, but that would be enough. The beans showed us karma. You bury it. The earth remembers. The mist keeps watch. The altitude stalls time. It returns wearing a robe of toasted fragrance. All we have to do is learn, brew, and swallow— only then understanding what it means to be repaid. But the children— children are that sliver of white when dawn first opens its eyes, not yet bleached by daylight. They poured out from the deepest hills of the Muang Khon, like fledglings just broken out of the night. They tilted up their faces, catching every word in their pupils, gleaming as if they had caught the whole morning. In that moment I understood: they were born in this City of Dawn. The mountains are deep, the fog thick, but dawn has never meant day is already here— it means day is about to break. They stand where light first rolls over, endless mountains at their backs, and before their eyes, an endless clearing sky. Charity we brought with us, with love and hope we return. with the nine prayers of wholeness at the pagodas, with the last sweet swallow at the bottom of a coffee cup, with the dawn-broken wind in the children’s voices when they called us teacher. Muang Khon, you never told us when the change began. But this I know: Together in those mountains, we bathed in the dawnlight.

I’ve never ever thought in my life, that a place could be that memorable and meaningful to me. In this information age, everything seems to fly by in a glimpse of an eye. This trip to the south-western corner of China gave me a chance to slow my steps down, to actually look at the surrounding views, and more importantly, the people with me on my way. Together, we climbed mountains, walked through the quietest, secluded pathways, we talked, we laughed, we cherished the memories in our deepest places. In the last day, we visited a local primary school. The passion and enthusiasm that each and every one of the students there possesses is like a lost art, things that have to be exchanged for ‘matureness’ and ‘composure’. Their laughs remind me of all the beauty in this world; it deeply moved me and made me rethink about what I really want. What really matters is never the titles, tags, the mundane desires; the world itself is the one that’s truly valuable and irreplaceable. The one that truly deserves to be loved.

Four days in Yunnan felt far longer than four days should. When we arrived in Mangshi, Yunnan, the golden and silver pagodas rose against the evening sky. It was an immediate sign that we had stepped into something entirely different from the rhythm of Shanghai. Over the following days, that feeling only deepened. We hiked through dense mountain forests without internet access, following winding trails while our guide pointed out edible fruits growing beside the path. For a few hours, directions came from the landscape rather than a map, and conversation was not interrupted by a single notification. Near the end of the hike, our teachers led us deeper into the mountains to observe wild monkeys, turning what we assumed was the journey’s conclusion into one of its most unexpected highlights.
Yunnan also tested our palates. We sampled regional specialties, including insects such as maja, and shared meals that introduced us to local traditions through food. At Beaton Coffee, we traced the journey from coffee bean to cup: we created artworks with coffee, learned about cacao bean cultivation, brewed our own Americanos, and weaved bracelets from the beans themselves. That evening, a group of us persuaded Ms. Li to join us at the fruit market across the street. We returned with bags overflowing with local tropical fruit (some we had never seen before) and spent the night in what felt like an endless feast.
Yet the moment I keep returning to happened on the final day. At a local primary school, we visited a youth mental health classroom that our fundraising efforts had helped support and ran activity stations at the school’s mental health fair. As our bus prepared to leave, a young girl stepped aboard, slightly out of breath, carrying a small wrinkled piece of paper and a pencil. She wanted my autograph. I hesitated. There was nothing remarkable about me, yet she had run to reach us, holding that paper as though it were something worth keeping. The exchange lasted less than a minute. As the bus pulled away, I realized that I had arrived in Yunnan expecting to learn about a place. What I hadn’t anticipated was how much I would learn from its people: their sincerity, warmth, and the ease with which they made a stranger feel seen. Long after the scenery fades, it is that kindness I will carry home.

Through the airplane window, I watch the mountains grow smaller beneath me as we ascend through the clouds into an endless, cloudless blue sky. The four-day journey is over. There’s a lot to reflect on, a lot to take in, but above all, there is a sense of unreality. Four days is neither too short nor too long. Didn’t I just board the plane to Yunnan yesterday? So why am I already heading back to Shanghai now? It’s not that Shanghai is terrible. It’s just that Yunnan is too beautiful. By day, we immersed ourselves in Yunnan’s local culture. Visiting the Golden and Silver Pagodas, hiking in the mountains to seek traces of monkeys, exploring creative experiences at a coffee estate, and finally sharing our life stories with children in Fengping Town Central School. What touched me the most was when a little girl ran after our bus and gave my friend a big hug. Their smile and laughter will be a lifelong memory.

To describe this Yunnan trip, I would use the words exotic and unforgettable. In Shanghai, I used to be someone who rarely went out and did not often enjoy outdoor activities. I preferred staying at home, or sometimes going out only to take pictures. Because of this, I was worried about activities such as walking in the mountains. However, this Yunnan trip completely changed my view. During the trip, I truly enjoyed the beautiful mountain scenery, the exotic, interesting, and delicious local food, joyful moments with my friends and most importantly, the passion I felt from the children at the primary school. Their energy and enthusiasm deeply moved me. They showed me how powerful passion can be, and how it can encourage people to keep moving forward. This trip inspired me to become more open-minded and willing to try new things.

I feel deeply honored to have been chosen for this Yunnan trip, and every moment breathing and playing in this place exceeded my expectations. Visiting the majestic Menghuan Golden Temple was a fabulous experience; the golden spires shone brilliantly, leaving me in awe of the local culture. During our coffee workshop, I never imagined coffee beans could become such a meaningful medium for us to show our creativity. We crushed beans to draw emojis and patterns, then learned hand-brewed coffee from local masters, who carefully taught us the skills to control water temperature and pouring technique. We also listened to their deep coffee culture and history, which made every sip feel special.
Another highlight was hiking 5 kilometers through the forest at an altitude of 2500m, breathing in the fresh, cool air, and hearing only birdsong, moving away from the bustle of the city. Besides, Yunnan cuisine was a delightful challenge; I tried the sour noodles, grilled tofu, and pork. But the most unforgettable moment was my first time eating insects: crispy worms and roasted grasshoppers. To my surprise, they tasted like crunchy nuts, and overcoming my fear made me proud. The most touching moment came when we visited the local primary school. Teaching the children was pure joy, as watching them participate with effort and laughter reminded me why education truly matters.
At last, traveling alongside seven other friends from our school bonded us more closely, such as late-night talks and laughter. We supported and encouraged each other throughout. This trip gave me not only amazing memories but also a second family for me.

Closing Thoughts on Charity
“Living up to virtue means shouldering responsibility. Why do we strive for knowledge and skills? If we lack the moral integrity to bear great responsibilities, all our efforts lose their meaning.”
Through charity work to strengthen connections with the world has always been an important part of campus culture at SUIS Gubei. Students’ world is often limited to their families and campus. Charitable activities allow them to meet different people and see the real world in full view. When the abstract concept of “society” in textbooks turns into real elderly people, left-behind children or stray animals, abstract “sense of responsibility” and “empathy” gain real footholds. The confusion common in adolescence often stems from the question of “what is the relationship between myself and the world”. Charity offers a meaningful answer: we affirm our own value by creating value for others. When we truly help other groups, the sense of efficacy brought about by changes made through our own actions becomes an important source of self-confidence and self-identity, helping students grow from “those who are taken care of” into individuals with social responsibility.
Charity provides students of SUIS Gubei with a way to interact deeply with the world. Through this interaction, they see reality, affirm themselves, understand complexity, temper resilience, and finally find their own position in a broader coordinate. In this process, the world becomes a little warmer because of them, and they also grow into more complete people because of the world.
