In September 2025, the UNESCO International STEM Education Institute was officially established in Shanghai, marking China’s entry into the global forefront of STEM education. Building on this momentum, Shanghai United International School Gubei Campus, which has always stayed at the forefront of international education, has officially announced that it will launch a new two-year A-Level programme from the 2027 academic year. The first phase will focus on four core subjects—Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and Economics—creating a focused and precise pathway for students with outstanding strengths in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Why the New A-Level STEM Track?

SUIS Gubei has nearly 20 years of successful experience running the IBDP programme, with graduates admitted to top universities around the world. Yet years of educational practice have also revealed an important pattern: nearly 40% of students eventually choose STEM-related fields, and many of them are students with strong mathematical and scientific foundations and outstanding logical thinking abilities. For these learners, who have strong interest and talent in STEM, the school believes they benefit more from concentrating on their strongest subjects rather than following a broadly balanced curriculum. The new A-Level track therefore allows STEM-talented students to deepen their expertise in core disciplines and strengthen their applications to leading global universities.

“STEM + Economics”: Depth with Breadth
课程组合“理工+经济”：深而不窄，宽而有度
The first phase of the new A-Level track offers Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and Economics, a carefully designed combination of “STEM depth plus economic logic.” Further Mathematics and Physics meet the core entry requirements for many popular STEM degrees, including Engineering, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Applied Mathematics, laying a strong foundation for applications to UK G5 universities such as Cambridge, Imperial College London and UCL. Economics keeps pathways open to interdisciplinary fields such as Finance, Economic Analysis, Data Science and Management Science, so that students can pursue depth without narrowing their future options too early.

Small classes, selective admissions, quality assured

As a new pathway within SUIS Gubei, the inaugural A-Level cohort will be taught in small classes to ensure sufficient personalised guidance. The first intake will mainly be open to current students who have obtained senior high school enrolment through the senior high school entrance examination, as well as eligible external applicants. Applications will open at the beginning of the second semester of the 2026 academic year, accompanied by programme briefings for current senior students, followed by selective admission through written tests and interviews.

The A-Level track is not a separate department; it is fully integrated into SUIS Gubei’s existing management system. Curriculum and teaching will be coordinated by the school’s core academic team, university counselling will share the global resources built up through many years of IBDP practice, and student affairs will continue to be managed by the school’s student development team.
