The finalists explored diverse and thought-provoking themes and presented bold ideas, ranging from sewage systems to sustainable food production to urban sprawl. It was truly inspiring to see our students engage with such important issues facing our city and how different aspects of the city shape their lives.
The panel of judges for the competition included Ms. Enran Zhang, a certified architect from the urban planning firm Chapman-Taylor, Mr. Wensheng Xie, a district leader with the internationally renowned public speaking organization Toastmasters, and last year’s Urban Planners Speech Contest winner, Eason Yuan. Their expertise on the topics gave valuable insight to the event and they also offered some great advice to the participating students.

The judges certainly had a tough time deciding on the top three after a series of excellent speeches. After much anticipation, the winners were finally announced. Tanisha Chaudhury took first place with her speech on “Shaping Shanghai” which talked about affordability and sustainability in Shanghai, followed by Raelin Kua in second place and Ella Chen in third place. In reflecting on her victory, Tanisha Chaudhury shared, “Standing in front of the judges at the urban planner speech contest in Grade 9, I realized how much passion I had for shaping the future of cities—suddenly, all my ideas about design, sustainability, and community felt like they could actually make a difference.” Her words remind us of the importance of finding our passion and making a positive impact on our community.
Reflecting on the contest, Ms. Zhang said, “The event is very meaningful for triggering students’ curiosity towards how cities are planned and how to make our urban environment and life in Shanghai better. I am amazed by the scope and details of the candidates’ research on matters of urban design.”
