Moganshan, renowned for its stunning scenery and rich natural landscapes, provided the perfect setting for SUIS Gubei Grade 11 IB Geography students to undertake their Geography IA field trip accompanied by their teachers. Surrounded by rivers, forests and mountain ranges, students were able to step outside the classroom and conduct independent geographical research in a real-world environment.

Over the course of two days, students conducted fieldwork investigations along the Panxi River as part of their Internal Assessment (IA) research. Working collaboratively in groups, students investigated both river water quality and the physical changes occurring along the river channel. Across 12 different sites, students used a variety of scientific equipment and testing methods to collect primary data. Chemical investigations included testing pH levels, turbidity and dissolved substances within the water, while physical investigations focused on measurements such as channel depth, river velocity, wetted perimeter and channel width.
Although teachers were present to guide and support the students throughout the expedition, students demonstrated strong independence, competence and resilience during the data collection process. Fieldwork often presented unexpected challenges, however students showed impressive problem-solving skills and teamwork when investigations did not go according to plan. The experience encouraged students to think critically, collaborate effectively and better understand the rigours and realities of geographical research.

Beyond the academic component of the trip, students were also given the opportunity to connect with the natural environment and local community. Many students spent time identifying fish and bird species, observing the changing landscapes and engaging with local villagers to learn more about life in rural areas. From agricultural land to forested mountain scenery, the diversity of landscapes in Moganshan allowed students to gain a deeper appreciation of both the physical and human geography of the region.
The Moganshan field trip was ultimately a great success, not only because of the valuable data students collected, but because of the important lessons they learned throughout the experience. Students developed a stronger understanding of academic honesty, scientific rigour and the importance of respecting each other, the environment and local communities. It was a memorable and enriching experience for both students and teachers, and one that we look forward to hosting again in the future.
