On 8 April, over 140 Grade 11 students completed their first mandatory assessment component for the IBDP – the Theory of knowledge (TOK) Exhibition. TOK is an IB course that requires students to discuss the different ways that knowledge manifests in the world around them. For this exhibition, students had to present to an audience how knowledge impacts the way people think and behave by conveying their ideas through three real-world objects.

SUIS Gubei students presented a variety of interesting objects ranging from cherished personal items to large iconic artefacts. Abby Wu brought in her tennis racquet to demonstrate how some knowledge is dependent on interactions with other knowers. For instance, a beginner tennis player could learn all of the movements and rules associated with the sport from a coach but also must rely completely on a professional stringer to ensure the racquet is tightened to the required tensions.
Chloe Ling used the Disney movie ‘Turning Red’ to demonstrate how knowledge and culture are closely related. She showed how the movie uses Chinese immigrant culture as a vehicle to communicate the feelings, anxieties, and challenges faced by young girls coming into adolescence.
Samuel Cheng presented the book ‘What if? Serious scientific answers to absurd hypothetical questions’ to explore why people seek knowledge. He explained that not all knowledge is driven by a specific purpose but can be enriching nonetheless – emphasizing the key point of the TOK programme – that the relationship people have with knowledge is complex and exciting.
Chloe Ling

Congratulations to our G11 students for completing this important milestone in their IB journey.
